Choosing your instructor

It's not particularly easy to differentiate a good driving schools from a bad one. Other than going on recommendations from friends, it's usually a case of try before you buy. When choosing an instructor, ask some initial questions.

Which areas do you cover and are you familiar with the test routes at my local driving test centre?

Learning each and every driving test route certainly isn't necessary, but getting clued up on the difficult bits that all driving examiners incorporate into their routes certainly will help a tremendous amount. Some driving instructors travel around to many towns and cities to work, whilst others are local. Local instructors are more likely to be very familiar with the test routes in your Staffordshire area, meaning they will know all the tricky parts.

The instructor will also assess you and at the end of the lesson run through your progress and discuss a suitable driving course based on your progress. He or she will also likely give you an estimate of how many driving lessons before the test.

The driving instructor should also be licensed to teach for pay by holding a green licence displayed in the front window (or close to) or a pink trainee driving instructor licence. Using a trainee driving instructor is fine although they are likely to be less experienced than a fully qualified instructor.

How else can I make learning to drive easy

If you have the option of taking private lessons, this can be beneficial. Teaching someone to drive can be challenging however and is not be suited to everyone. If you feel that your private lessons with family or friends are counterproductive, you're best off stopping them altogether. Private lessons should be taken only as a means to increase your driving experience on the roads and to follow what the instructor has already taught you. If it works well however, then this can help to further your skills and confidence, increasing your chances to pass the driving test first time.
